Using Mobile Applications

Lesson Plan

Objective: 

Participants will be able to know the basics of using mobile applications while practicing installing some useful mobile applications

Total Time: 90 Minutes
Materials Required: Projector, White board, marker, Smart Phones of students with Internet connection, Powerpoint presentation, downloaded video from YouTube

Instructor Note: 

Technology can really make our lives efficient, if we know how to use it well. There are plenty of paid and free mobile applications for different uses that students should learn to use. Before this session, the trainer should grab knowledge of various trending mobile apps. 


Opening Protocol:

  • Greet the participants

  • Take attendance

  • In pairs, ask participants to share with each other how they are feeling

  • Recap the previous session by asking 1-2 participants to share with the class, what they learnt and did in the previous session

Opening Activity:

  • Ask them What does Mobile app means?

  • Tell students about the importance of mobile apps

  • The mobile apps are available through application distribution platforms

Activity 1: Mobile App Quiz

  • For basic understanding of students & making sessions more interactive show them ppt of app logo quiz. These logos have also been given in the student handbook

  • When you present the PPT, ask students to fill the name in their handbook. And then ask everyone for the right answer.

  • After each guess, tell them briefly about the specific mobile app

15 Minutes

Concept Demonstration 

Demonstrate and tell them about atleast 5 apps which they should know about such as :-

1. Google Translate

  • Ask students if some of them have written letter in Hindi

  • Show usage of Google Translate on screen

  • Choose one students who has written the letter in Hindi 

  • Ask him to write anything in Hindi

  • Google will translate

  • There is an App also “Google Translate”

  • So even if we don’t know English, we can translate Hindi from English to almost perfection.

2. Grammarly 

  • If you know how to write English but want to write better. Grammarly is one app that can help you write better

  • In your phone Grammarly gets installed to your keyboard. The moment you write in any application on your mobile. It will help you improve your writing.

  • Show the usage of Grammarly on screen.

3.Gmail

4. PDF creator

5. Amazon kindle etc


Based on the needs of participants, trainers can feel free to pick any 5 apps for demonstration. Please check that you don’t use the Apps that are being covered in the following activities.

Concept Demonstration – Install and Uninstall

Show this video, or ask students to discuss the concept they learnt in their handbook i.e. how to search, install & uninstall these apps from various platforms:

  • Android – Play store

  • Apple –ios App store


After a quick discussion/video, demonstrate installing and uninstalling a mobile app

Activity 2:- Payment Apps 

Tell students that innovation has made our lives much easier. Moreover, the mobile apps provide consumers with all new ways of exchanging money. With the help of PPT, share some examples of payment applications and then ask them to install any mobile application on their phone. Also, ask them to use a handbook to write the steps they followed for installing the app. Based on the number of smartphones available in class, students can do this activity in groups or individually.

Concept Discussion:  Digital Security


  • Divide students in 2 groups. Give them 5 minutes for the discussion-

  1. Examples of security concerns

  2. Tips to ensure digital security


  • Students can feel free to read the concept given in their handbook.


  • After 5 minutes, ask both the groups to send a representative to share the points in front of the entire class

  • When students share their points, correct them if they are wrong, and add points if they are missing anything important

Concept Discussion:- Free VS Paid VS Freemium APPS 

With the help of PPT, explain Freemium, Paid and Free mobile applications.

  • Freemium apps- where you can download and enjoy the app for free while being offered optional in-app purchases for premium features, additional content, or digital goods. Example:- Get three months free & then Rs 99 like:

  1. YouTube Premium give trial initially & then starts charging

  2. Netflix – First month free trial & then charge.

These Apps also take your  payment details in beginning like card number, expiry date, CVV 

  • Examples of free apps:- Linkedin, AarogyaSetu, ZOOM cloud meeting etc

  • Examples of paid apps:- AdBlock(Rs 179), Jolly Phonic Lessons Pro (Rs 899) etc

Closing/Debrief:

Motivate students to use mobile applications safely. Use these 5 minutes to take questions from students. Randomly ask students to say one thing they learnt in the session.

Closing Protocol: 

  • Thank the participants for their time

  • Announce the next time you will be visiting them

  • Share the topic of the next session

  • Collect 1-2 most interesting activity sheets/artefacts from students and show to Nodal officer and institution head after session

  • Click pictures of the artefacts for documentation
