Lesson Plan

Participants will be able to understand and apply insert menu in document
Total Time: 90 Minutes
Materials Required: 
Computer lab with projector and screen, MS Word installed on all the computers for students
Instructor Note: 
After understanding and using basics of MS Word in the previous session, participants will learn and apply all the options in the Insert menu to make their documents more relevant and effective. Use demonstration as the training method and make students practice as much as possible
Opening Protocol: 

  • Greet the participants
  • Take attendance
  • In pairs, ask participants to share with each other how they are feeling.
  • Recap the previous session by asking 1-2 participants to share with the class what they learnt and did in the previous session.

5 Minutes

Opening Activity:

  • Take students’ questions from the previous session to ensure that they have all learned the basics of MS Word
  • Explain/demonstrate some commonly asked options again

Demonstration : Basics of Insert Menu

  • Insert picture 
  • Insert Clipart
  • Give the pictures titles using word art
  • Insert header, footer and page number
  • Insert hyperlink
  • Insert Symbols
  • Using MS Word type the formula for 


  • Use symbols for summation, labda, omega

10 Minutes

Activity: Practice

  • Ask students to open the word file that they had created in the previous session so they can apply new options on the same file 
  • Ask students to insert picture, clipart and some symbols to the document they had created in the previous session
15 Minutes
Demonstration: Insert Tables 

Recreate this table using MS Word and demonstrate all the table options

 10 Minutes

Activity 2: Practice

  • Ask students to create a presentable table on the same document
  • Give them 10 minutes to do that
  • After 10 minutes ask students if they faced any problem or if they have any questions
  • Use remaining 10 minutes to either make them practice the options or to answer their queries by demonstrating the options they might be finding difficult

Demonstration: Important tools

  • Tell students that they have learnt and practices all the basic options on MS word
  • Other than Home and Insert menus, there are some important tools that they will find in other menu options
  • With the help of PPT and demonstration, make them practice some tools like “spelling & grammar”, “word count”, “protech document” etc.

Activity 3: Icons handout exercise

  • Ask students to do check their understanding of the icons by filling in the activity 1 in their handbook
  • Students need to recognise the icon and fill the name at the blank space
  • After 10 minutes, discuss the right answers
15 Minutes
Closing Protocol: 

  • Thank the participants for their time
  • Announce the next time you will be visiting them
  • Share the topic of the next session
  • Collect 1-2 most interesting activity sheets/artefacts from students and show to Nodal officer and institution head after session
  • Click pictures of the artefacts for documentation
