Communication Skills

Lesson Plan

Participants will be able to practice impromptu speaking

Total Time: 90 Minutes

Material required: Slips of topics

Instructor Note:

After understanding the basics of speaking, listening and reading, participants will use this session to remove their hesitation and speak on the spot without any preparation. Use this session to boost students’ confidence and to encourage them to speak without any self-doubt.

Opening Protocol:

  • Greet the participants

  • Take attendance

  • In pairs, ask participants to share with each other how they are feeling

  • Recap the previous session by asking 1-2 participants to share with the class, what they learnt and did in the previous session

5 Minutes

Opening Activity:

  • Ask participants to open their handbooks and read Priya’s story. If participants are not carrying handbooks, you can narrate the story

  • End the story by telling that fear of speaking is a reality and can really become an obstacle in our way to success

  • Tell them that they have already been doing speaking practice in previous sessions, today they should just speak as much as they can

10 Minutes

Activity: Just Speak

  • Tell students that they are going to play a ‘pick and speak’ contest. Tell them they will come one by one on dais, pick a slip and speak on topic for 2 minutes. While one student is speaking, give the topic to the second student to collect his/her thoughts so each student gets 2 minutes to think on the topic and 2 minutes to speak. Per student time can be changed by the trainer according to the number of students.

  • Tell them they have to be spontaneous and take care of their body language while presenting. They can speak in regional language but should try to use English as much as possible.

  • While a student presents, ask others to observe and note down their comments about the presentation and after the presentations are done, ask students to quickly share their general feedback about each other’s presentation.

End the session by soliciting feedback from students.

65 Minutes

  • Give them 4 minutes to write

5 Minutes

Closing Protocol:

  • Thank the participants for their time

  • Announce the next time you will be visiting them

  • Share the topic of the next session

  • Collect 1-2 most interesting activity sheets/artefacts from students and show to Nodal officer and institution head after session
