SAP adopts 100 Atal Tinkering Labs (STEM Education Labs) to prepare Indian students for Industry 4.0

Today, we are living in a world that is shaped by technology, globalization and rapid economic growth. And to stay relevant in this world, skill development stands as the key instrument to harness productivity and efficiency. The globalised economies are demanding extensive manpower to convert growth opportunities into jobs and stable income. Every year, millions of job seekers enter the job market, but do they have the desired skill sets? Are they employable?

A FICCI-NASSCOM & EY report revealed that by 2022, 9 percent of the country's 600 million estimated workforce would be deployed in new jobs that do not even exist today, while 37 percent would be in jobs that have radically changed skill sets. That’s why skill development tops SAP’s priority list.

Accelerating skill development with IT push

As traditional IT jobs are witnessing a gradual decline, India is opening its doors to new career paths for its IT workforce with digital domains like Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity coming to the forefront. At SAP, we are committed to dedicating our efforts to achieve scalable skilling with quality and higher productivity of the employable youth of the country.

Our mission at SAP is to provide the world’s youth and social enterprises with the skills they need to tackle society’s problems and thrive in the digital economy. As a technology thought leader, we wish to bridge the IT skills gap by leveraging our talent, technology, and partnership with strong non-governmental organizations (NGO).

By signing a Statement of Intent (SOI) with NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), a flagship programme of the Government of India, we aim to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in line with the government’s Digital India vision. As part of the SOI, SAP in 2018 will adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education among secondary school children across India, specifically the states of Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Fostering social innovation through digital growth

The United Nations has defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the world’s economy, society, and environment. These goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Our CSR initiatives mainly integrate Goals 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 17 (Partnership for Goals) with our own higher purpose: to help the world run better and improve.

Digital literacy and technology skilling is not just restricted to job creation for IT sector, but, aimed at empowering the citizens to enable meaningful employment and self-employment in various domains. Under our Code Unnati initiative, around 50,500 students at 10 locations across India have been trained in advanced IT skills. With this new partnership, we plan to maintain a similar trajectory to ensure that India’s youth are ready for a digital world.

In a stride to strengthen SAP’s enduring vision and purpose in India, SAP Labs India partnered with Department of Information Technology & Biotechnology (ITBT), State Government of Karnataka (GoK) last month, to impart advanced IT training for 15,000 youth in Karnataka by 2020. The IT skilling initiative aims to create employment opportunities for the youth. With this initiative, we would continue to reinforce our commitment to the society and economic growth, while reaffirming our thought leadership.

The road ahead

The world today presents us with opportunities like never before. Leveraging the principles of Industry 4.0, and its enabling technologies to automate, integrate, and optimize manufacturing processes, SAP aims to shorten cycle times, improve product quality, and implement efficiency across operations.

The IMF estimates that the Indian economy will grow by 7.4% in 2018 and 7.8% in 2019, positioning it as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. And to help India maintain its growth trajectory in the long term, and to reap the benefits of Industry 4.0 in the country, we look forward to continuing our collaborations with governments and academia. This will further ignite innovation in India’s large student population through providing the right guidance, knowledge, and infrastructure, which not only improves lives but also advances the technology ecosystem as a whole. We’re already seeing examples of companies reaping the benefits of their Industry 4.0 journey, which is a testament to the fact that its huge potential value cannot go unnoticed.
